But inspite of all this, Evan is progressing like a real trooper. His development is currently 3 months behind, but he surpises me and his therapists with new things every day.
Evan provides me with the strength that I need to live each day. Looking at him smiling at me is all I need. He is my miracle baby and I am so blessed to have him still with me.
Jenny Coleman
Evan's mom
On January 14th, 2001 I gave birth to my first born---a beautiful baby boy named Evan. He came into this world just a little earlier than scheduled but was healthy none the less. A week before his 4 month birthday, the unimaginable happened.
It was May 8, 2001. I was at work and had this urge to call home and check in. Evan's father answered the phone (we were living together) and everything seemed fine until I heard Evan screaming in pain.
It was a cry I will never forget.
I was told that I needed to come down to the hospital because when Evan arrived, he wasnt responding. They did a CAT scan on Evan and found that he had bleeding in several areas of the brain, swelling of the brain and multiple skull fractures. On top of this, later tests revealed that Evan also had fractures of all of his ribs, fractured legs and arms. He also had retinal hemmorages in both of his eyes. Evan's father confessed that night to shaking Evan out of frustration from his crying and when Evan would not stop, he then went into Evan's room and threw him across the room into his crib. Evan's little head became wedged inbetween the bars of his crib. Evan suffered from major lack of oxygen and started going in and out of seizures.
The medical professionals gave Evan a 25% chance of living. He was put on a ventilator and was in ICU for a week. Evan then started to pull through and was out of the hospital in 3 weeks. He had to learn how to do all of his natural instincts again. Because of the severity of the abuse that Evan sustained, I lost custody of him for almost 2 months. Luckily, he was able to stay with my mother until things got straightened out with Child Welfare.
Evan has had to learn how to trust people again among many other things.
He is on Dilantin for seizures and receives Physical, Occupational, Speech and Special Education therapy 4 times a week.
He also has permanent indentations in his head from where his head was stuck in between the rails of his crib.
