All of this heartache for him and his mother just because his father couldn't control his anger and destroyed the one person that he was supposed to protect from harm. Unleashed anger can maim and kill. His mother and grandmother, Colleen loves Colton very much and prays nightly for a miracle for him to get better. They have cried many a tear for this precious bundle of joy.

Colleen Aguilar
Coltons grandma.

Colton Lane Derrick was born on Sept. 14, 1996 to Darlene Derrick a single Mom. He was a happy, healthy blue eyed boy and the joy of everyone that came to see him.
Colton's Dad didn't know too much about taking care of babies so he was taught the basics by Darlene. Two nights before Thanksgiving, Colton was ten weeks old, he spent the night with his Dad. Colton had a cold and didn't feel that well and woke up around 4 AM or so and started to cry. Not being able to stop his crying his father shook him 7-15 times.
He stopped shaking when Colton stopped crying. Colton started having trouble breathing and this scared his father so he called 911 and lied to everyone about what had happened. Colton's spent his first two weeks in P.I.C.U fighting for his life and us trying to control his seizures. The third week he came out of the coma and they had to teach him how to suck a bottle again.
They set up his OT, PT and speech therapies for when he went home and Darlene applied for Medicaid for him so she would have the money and resources to help him and to help her since she knew that she wouldn't be working

In a minute or less of shaking Colton's brain had been damaged so much that
when he left the hospital we were told that he had Cortical blindness, 85% brain damage, lost 60% of brain mass, seizures, C. P. and a lot of learning disabilities.
Colton was a happy go lucky little boy for the first three to four years after the shaking. He was put in leg braces to keep his ankles from turning to help him walk and stand. He is cortically blind but has destroyed both eyes due to self-abusive behavior resulting in him hitting himself in his eyes, which has caused hyphemas in both eyes and the corneas to be blood stained due to the pressure pushing the blood against them.   It was thought for a time that they might have to remove his eyes and put in artificial ones. So far that hasn't happened. He now keeps his eyes shut for the most part.
Colton can't walk or talk and only makes sounds, very loud sounds at times. He rarely cries but feels pain more that most. He also fights chronic ear infections because the right ear won't drain so it cakes up and puts a lot of pressure on it.
Frustration set in on Colton in a big way. The older he gets his thought process I think has improved but he can't tell anyone about what he thinks or how he feels.

He is trapped in a body that he can't control and he is fighting back the best way he knows how.

He will pinch, bite and scratch anyone that is holding him, or he will hit himself on the head or mouth and cause damage and draw blood if he isn't watched 24/7. Colton now has to ware arm braces to prevent him from doing further damage.
Darlene hasn't been able to work since this has happened to Colton. You have to be available 24/7 with him even though he is in school now, she never knows when they will call her, because he gets so upset they can't calm him down.
We may have to put him in a behavior clinic to see if we can help him. They say that they have a good success record.  Colton now has a wheelchair, stander and walker. He can feed himself and has been able to do this for years and drinks by himself.
